These are perhaps the easiest places to start, as you already have that built-in \u201cOrange\u201d connection.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Every connection is a good connection! It\u2019s ok to have multiple contacts at the same company. How did you find their contact information? Why are you reaching out? Make these things clear in the very beginning of your email so that the contact will want to read on. Better yet, try to establish this in the subject line of your email so that the contact will know to open it. Something along the lines of \u201cSyracuse Student Seeking [Industry] Advice.\u201d Or, if someone referred you to the contact, drop the name of the referral in your subject line: \u201cFred Green Referral.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n<article id=\"faq-block_5f34166b96ec8\" class=\"faq--item\">\n   <div class=\"faq--question\">Once I connect with a person, how often should I keep in touch with them? I don\u2019t want to be a nuisance.  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/resources.newhouse.syr.edu\/cdc\/wp-content\/themes\/cdc-resources-theme-master\/img\/plus-solid.svg\" alt=\"Plus sign\" class=\"faq--question--icon\"><\/div>\n   <div class=\"faq--answer\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you first reach out to a new contact, it\u2019s a good idea to keep in touch every four to six weeks to start. This will ensure that you\u2019re \u201ctop of mind\u201d for the contact; the person will find it easier to remember you, especially when an opportunity arises that makes them think of you! This is ideal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n<article id=\"faq-block_5f34166d96ec9\" class=\"faq--item\">\n   <div class=\"faq--question\">How do I tell a contact that I\u2019m interested in working at their office for an internship or job?  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/resources.newhouse.syr.edu\/cdc\/wp-content\/themes\/cdc-resources-theme-master\/img\/plus-solid.svg\" alt=\"Plus sign\" class=\"faq--question--icon\"><\/div>\n   <div class=\"faq--answer\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t recommend leading with the fact that you want to work for that person\u2019s employer. This can cause you to come across as disingenuous or opportunistic, even if this isn\u2019t your intention. Instead, focus on the individual &#8211; not what you want &#8211; first. Try asking a question about the contact and <\/span><b>then <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mentioning that you\u2019re also interested in internships or careers with the company. Take a look at this example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhich skills did you develop as a TRF major that help you in your advertising career?&#8230; I am also interested in your company\u2019s internship program. I\u2019m not sure if you\u2019re involved with the internships at [company], but I was wondering if you have any advice on applying or if there is anyone you recommend that I follow up with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n<article id=\"faq-block_5f34166f96eca\" class=\"faq--item\">\n   <div class=\"faq--question\">What if I want to follow up, but I don\u2019t have any questions left to ask? <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/resources.newhouse.syr.edu\/cdc\/wp-content\/themes\/cdc-resources-theme-master\/img\/plus-solid.svg\" alt=\"Plus sign\" class=\"faq--question--icon\"><\/div>\n   <div class=\"faq--answer\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inevitably, you\u2019ll run out of questions to ask the contact at some point. That\u2019s ok! Consider giving them an update on your job\/internship search, letting them know how their advice has helped you in your search, or sending them an article that made you think of them. There are many ways to stay connected that don\u2019t involve asking questions simply for the sake of asking them. The most important thing is that you <\/span><b>do <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep in contact with the person so that you remain top of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n<article id=\"faq-block_5f34173196ecb\" class=\"faq--item\">\n   <div class=\"faq--question\">I don\u2019t have access to the Newhouse Network yet. Does this mean I can\u2019t network at all? <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/resources.newhouse.syr.edu\/cdc\/wp-content\/themes\/cdc-resources-theme-master\/img\/plus-solid.svg\" alt=\"Plus sign\" class=\"faq--question--icon\"><\/div>\n   <div class=\"faq--answer\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No! Keep in mind that the Newhouse Network is only one resource. It\u2019s definitely convenient because it places Newhouse alumni on one clean platform. However, you can still find Newhouse alumni with whom to network while you wait for Newhouse Network access. LinkedIn is a great place to start, along with CareerShift. It\u2019s also a good idea to peruse company websites for contacts that you may be interested in reaching out to. The Career Development Center staff can help you navigate each platform and use them to your benefit!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n<article id=\"faq-block_5f34173496ecc\" class=\"faq--item\">\n   <div class=\"faq--question\">Should I only be networking with Syracuse\/Newhouse alumni? What if there aren\u2019t any alumni working at my target companies? <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/resources.newhouse.syr.edu\/cdc\/wp-content\/themes\/cdc-resources-theme-master\/img\/plus-solid.svg\" alt=\"Plus sign\" class=\"faq--question--icon\"><\/div>\n   <div class=\"faq--answer\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beauty of networking is that it is completely up to YOU who you decide to reach out to. This means that you\u2019re not limited to Syracuse or Newhouse alumni alone. If you\u2019re interested in working for an advertising agency, and you can\u2019t find any alumni there, find a person who is in a role that you can envision yourself pursuing. You\u2019ll have to establish the connection (your purpose for reaching out) in a different way in your initial email, but you\u2019ll still be forging a connection. That is the important thing. Keep in mind: every connection is a good connection to have. The more people who know who you are and what you want to do, the better your chances are of finding the right
