What to do NOW for the Business & Communications Career Fair

The Business & Communications Career Fair is coming up on September 27. Here are the top five things you should do NOW to set yourself up for success at the Fair.

STEP 1: Mark the date in your calendar

Wednesday, September 27: 3 to 7 p.m. at the JMA Dome

STEP 2: Download the Handshake app on your phone.

You will need this app to check in with companies at the career fair and how companies will get access to your resume after the fair. The app is available anywhere you usually download your apps.

STEP 3: Register on Handshake here and then ensure your Handshake profile is complete.

Fill in your information and be sure to upload your current resume so employers have access to it after the event! Upload what you have for a résumé now (you can change it before the event if you make changes but you do NOT want to forget and not have anything uploaded the day of the event!) AND make sure you mark it to be visible to employers.

STEP 4: Polish your résumé.

Does your résumé include what the communications industry expects it to have? Is it laid out in the order the industry prefers? If the answer to either of those questions is “no” or “not sure,” we have the fix for you! Set up an appointment with the Newhouse Career Development Center, email a copy to us for digital review (send it as a PDF to nhcdc@syr.edu), and make use of our drop-ins, which take place every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the CDC (313 Newhouse 3). Step 5: Keep an eye on the list of attending companies.

Periodically check in (set a couple reminders on your phone) and see which companies are of interest. Make a list of these and a couple notes of why you’re interested so you can start thinking about what you want to chat about when you see them at the fair.
