Beginning with Children (BwC) creates pathways to higher education, self-
sufficiency, and community engagement for New York City children. Founded by
Joe and Carol Reich in 1990 to support educational reform in New York City, BwC
manages two charter schools in Brooklyn and operates an innovative Alumni
Program. We are building on our legacy of over 30 years as we shape our model for
charter school education in Brooklyn and prepare our graduates to meet the quickly
changing expectations of the 21st Century.
We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Social Media Intern to support our
development efforts. This role is ideal for a college student or recent graduate
interested in nonprofit communications, digital marketing, and content creation.
The intern will work closely with the Development Director to strengthen our online
presence, engage our school community, and tell the story of our mission across
platforms.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Communications, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of major social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X).
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Creative thinker with an eye for storytelling and visual design.
- Experience with Canva, Hootsuite or other content scheduling tools is a plus.
- Comfortable working independently and proactively reaching out to others for content.
- Passion for education equity, youth development, or nonprofit work is a strong plus.
Duties
- Conduct a Social Media Audit: Analyze the social media presence of our schools to identify trends, content ideas, and engagement strategies we can apply to our channels.
- Content Strategy & Planning: Assist in developing a year-round content calendar for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X to ensure consistent and mission-aligned posting.
- Content Creation & Posting: Create and schedule engaging posts using photos, graphics, and written copy for our social channels, with a focus on increasing engagement and reach.
- Trend Research: Monitor social media trends and explore how they might be adapted to amplify our brand and programming.
- Community Engagement: Liaise with school leaders and program staff to collect timely and relevant content, including student success stories, events, and classroom moments.
- Event Coverage: Attend school and program events to capture photos and video for real-time or future use on social media and other platforms.
