The Athletic is accepting applications for its inaugural Leon H. Carter newsroom internship, a 12-week program either remote or based in New York City, which will run from September 16, 2024 - December 6, 2024. The intern will be embedded on our Major League Baseball desk, working directly alongside our talented team of editors and writers. The mission of The Athletic’s internship program is to attract and develop the industry’s next stars. The intern will help shape our most informative coverage while helping to advance our goal to be the top destination for sports news around the world. The rate of pay for this role is $20.00 USD per hour. 

Qualifications

• Undergraduate students who are ideally in their junior or senior year
• Ability to work a 30-40 hour work week
• Previous newsroom internship experience is a plus
• Flexibility: ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly
• Deep knowledge of and a passion for baseball and/or Major League Baseball
• This is a remote internship that will require some travel to New York City. Candidates based in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York office

Duties

• Attend daily weekday meetings of the MLB news enterprise team
• Accept projects assigned by the MLB news enterprise editors, whether it is contributing reporting to projects being led by other team members or taking the lead on specific assignments that can be executed during the offseason
• Work writing shifts focused on immediate news response
• Contribute to live blogs and previews during special coverage periods
• Be available to report stories remotely (video and phone calls, emails, texts)
• Be available for in-person reporting, whether it be games or press availability, dependent on location
• Be available to take any special assignments from the desk’s leadership team
