2024 USGA Championships Long-Term Player Relations Internship

The Player Relations office is a fast-paced working environment. The Player Relations Intern must have the ability to work under pressure and handle many tasks at one time. Each day brings new challenges and the intern must have top-notch organizational and communication skills. On a daily basis, the intern will find themselves working in a typical office environment as well as significant work done in exterior environs. The ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting boxes and manual labor may be required at times. In the weeks leading up to the Championships, the interns will work at least (40) hour work weeks; however, as we grow closer to the Championship, work weeks will lengthen to eighty plus hours (80+) and will include several weekends. An internship with the United States Golf Association and the Player Relations department is a tremendous first step for a career in the fields of event management and professional sports.
This person will assist the USGA Player Relations department and get an inside look at what happens in the time leading up to our championship season and more closely, the experience on-site at 4-6 different USGA Championships. While the position is based in Pinehurst, NC, significant travel over the championship season is required.
The 2024 U.S. Open Championship will be held at Pinehurst Country Club June 13-16, 2024, which will be hosting its fourth U.S. Open.
The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open Championship will be held at Lancaster Country Club, (May 30 – June 2, 2024) which will be hosting its’ second U.S. Women’s Open Championship. Located in Lancaster, PA, Lancaster Country Club will provide a true test of golf for some of the best female players in the world.
Additionally, the Player Relations Interns will support staff at several but not all of the following championships: U.S. Senior Open (Newport Country Club, Newport R.I.), U.S. Girls’ Junior (El Caballero Country Club, Tarzana, Calif.), U.S. Junior Amateur (Oakland Hills Country Club, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), U.S. Women’s Amateur (Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, Okla.) U.S. Amateur (Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minn.) and U.S. Senior Women’s Open (Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh, Pa.)

Qualifications

  • Ability to work long and strenuous hours (40 - 80+ hour work week)
  • Effective communication with a wide variety of individuals involved in a national championship
  • Resourceful, presentable, courteous, friendly and organized
  • Good follow-up skills and ability to handle issues quickly and calmly
  • Ability to work independently and support the team
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office software - above average knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook, & PowerPoint
  • Ability to prepare presentations to include PowerPoint and printed material
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and execute detailed plans – able to anticipate and analyze problems and provide logical solutions
  • Ability to work well under pressure

Duties

  • Answering incoming e-mails and phone calls to the Player Relations Office
  • Maintain all necessary office supplies and order items as needed. May require local trips to pick-up items as required
  • Assist in taking and distributing notes for meetings as necessary
  • Assume the administrative role defined above within the Player Relations Office in the weeks leading up to, during and after the championship
  • Provide assistance to the Directors Player Relations in coordinating the player home rental and accommodations program, including communicating via phone and e-mail with homeowners and host hotel staff
  • Prepare onsite Player Relations setup and removal for temporary office workspaces
  • In conjunction with the Player Relation teams, assist with the arrival and departure needs of all players in the field
  • Assist with the distribution and collection of player and VIP courtesy vehicles
  • Assist in the planning and execution efforts of the player gifting and general hospitality
  • Take an active role in the caddie program at each championship including registration, caddie bib distribution/collection, etc.
  • Assist with the distribution of credentials, packets and information to players and their support groups
