Get Ready Now: How to Land Your Spring or Summer Internship
By Bridget Lichtinger | August 28, 2025
The best time to position yourself for a spring or summer internship is right now. Many spring internships recruit during the fall semester, and some of the most competitive summer internships at big-name companies and industry leaders start their recruiting process early. Starting your search now gives you a head start.
Step One: Build Your Search Strategy
A great place to begin is by attending the Newhouse CDC’s Finding an Internship seminar. This session will walk you through how to take charge of your internship search. We will show you how to use AI to find potential companies, where to look for opportunities, how to follow up on leads, and make the most of resources available to you. One of the key strategies we highlight is organization: how to track applications and deadlines, especially those with early or rolling application dates. Explain how submitting applications on time (or early!) keeps you competitive and stress-free.
Step Two: Tap Into Connections
Having someone inside the company, such as an alumnus, mentor, or professional contact can make all the difference. When applicant pools are large and competitive, a personal referral or a quick message to flag your application can help you stand out in the review process.
Step Three: Use Professional Tools
Platforms like LinkedIn and Careershift can help you research companies, connect with professionals, and track opportunities. You’ll learn how to use these tools more effectively during the seminar.
Step Four: Take Action This Semester
Your mission over the next few months: Identify the companies and organizations where you’d like to apply. Network with professionals in your field of interest. Schedule interviews (even informational ones!) to learn more about internship programs.
Step Five: Get Support Along the Way
You’re not in this alone. You can book an appointment with the Newhouse CDC anytime through Handshake (click Career Center at the top of the page). Bring your questions, your internship success plan, and even your draft application materials. We’ll also help you strengthen your resume and cover letters so you’re ready to apply with confidence.
We’re here to support you at every step—so start early, stay organized, and let’s get you closer to that internship you’re aiming for.
