What’s an Elevator Pitch? How Do You Create One?
By Bridget Lichtinger | September 30, 2025
Ever been asked, “So, tell me about yourself?” and suddenly forgotten everything cool you’ve ever done? That’s where an elevator pitch saves the day.
It’s a 30–60 second introduction that tells employers who you are, what you’ve done, and where you’re headed. Think of it as your personal trailer. It is quick, memorable, and showing off your best highlights.
Whether you are attending the in person tomorrow at the JMA Wireless Dome or getting ready for the Virtual Communications, Journalism and Media career fair on October 17, you have to be prepare to make an unforgettable impression. No pressure, right?
The Big Three: I Am, I Know, I Can
This simple formula makes it easy to build your pitch:
- I Am → adjectives: How would you describe yourself? (Creative, detail-oriented, collaborative…)
- I Know → nouns: What knowledge have you gained from classes, internships, jobs, or clubs? (Marketing strategies, event planning, sports management…)
- I Can → verbs: What skills can you do that transfer anywhere? (Write, analyze, design, lead, organize…)
Build Your Short Story
Your pitch isn’t just a list. Make it a mini-story! First, it starts with you. Who are you, and what led you to your major (I am)? Next, you add evidence. Highlight an internship, project, or role that proves your strengths (I can). End by connecting to the future. Share what kind of role or industry you’re aiming for (I know).
Example:
“I’m a senior studying Advertising, and through my internship as an account coordinator at a sports organization, I learned how to manage campaigns and analyze data. I know how to create strategies that connect with audiences, and I can bring creativity and leadership to a fast-paced marketing team. I’m excited to start my career in sports marketing.”
Practice, Then Use It Everywhere
- Career fairs: Kick off conversations with recruiters.
- Networking events: Give people a quick sense of your story.
- Interviews: It’s your go-to answer for “Tell me about yourself.”
- LinkedIn: Your pitch makes a perfect profile summary.
Key Takeaway
Your elevator pitch = your personal brand in 60 seconds. Keep it clear, confident, and true to you. The more you practice, the easier it’ll feel and the stronger impression you’ll make.
