Toner Prize 2023
2023 Toner Prizes Entry Form
Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is now accepting entries for the 2023 Toner Prizes competition honoring excellence in political reporting. Two prizes will be given: One for national and one for local political reporting. Each carries a $5,000 honorarium.
Entry deadline is Jan. 16, 2023, by 11:59 p.m.
The Toner Prizes go to the best U.S. political reporting on any platform: print, broadcast or online. They are named for late alumna Robin Toner ’76, the first woman to serve as national political correspondent for The New York Times.
Entries must be fact-based reporting, not commentary. Single articles or a body of work are eligible. Each entry is limited to five stories. A news organization may enter more than one reporter or team, but the same reporter or team can be entered only once. Reporters may enter their own work, but can enter only once. There is no entry fee.
The work must have been reported, published, posted or broadcast between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022. Books are ineligible.
Entries will be judged on how well they reflect the high standards and depth of reporting that marked Robin Toner’s work. In particular, the judges will look at how well the entries:
- Illuminate the electoral process, with a particular focus on coverage of candidates, campaigns and elections; or
- Reveal the politics of policy and
- Engage the public in democracy
